Foley & Lardner LLP is a leading international law firm with offices in eighteen major cities in the US as well as Brussels, Shanghai and Tokyo having a total of over 1000 attorneys. Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Foley & Lardner is known for its litigation department. The firm has expanded from its Midwest roots to become a global law firm with strong practices in intellectual property, healthcare, regulatory law, and tax. In 2010, the firm's gross revenue fell 5% to around US$ 633,000,000.

The firm has four core departments, i.e. business law, intellectual property, litigation and regulated industries and cutting-edge industry teams. Foley is recognized by its clients and within the law fraternity for its team-based approach, innovative technology and focus on value and client service.

Foley offers trust and wealth administration services through its Foley Private Office division, and it has trademarked its KnowledgeGate Web resource. Also, the firm has developed Foley ClientSuite, which is a "virtual office" that lets clients access customized packages of white papers, guidelines and policy documents.

Started in 1842, Foley's unique culture and core values have been developed and maintained for more than 150 years now. Founded by Asahel Finch, Jr., and William Pitt Lynde, Foley has a rich history of legal practice. The firm was one of the oldest law firms in Wisconsin. It took more than a century for the firm to get established outside Wisconsin.

In the Midwest, Foley cemented its status as a regional heavy hitter via a 2001 merger with storied firm Hopkins & Sutter but the merger didn't go off well as nearly half of the subsumed firm's Chicago attorneys left within three years.

In 2007, Foley opened offices from Miami to Shanghai. Today the firm offers international services aimed at clients in China, Japan, Israel and Latin America.

Notable cases
  • Foley has extended its legal services to some of the notable clients such as Johnson Controls, Harley Davidson, Major League Baseball and Acciona.
  • The firm represented Guggenheim Baseball Management in its acquisition of the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking the single largest transaction ever for a professional sports franchise. This complex transaction, valued at over $2 billion, involved a unique and highly competitive sale process and an aggressive timeline.
  • IT represented Quad/Graphics, Inc. in the acquisition of World Color Press Inc. and related acquisition financing (with combined market capitalization of approximately $2 billion). As a result of the deal, Quad/Graphics became a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE.
  • Obtained allowances for EnGeneIC Molecular Delivery Pty Ltd. in the United States, Europe, and Japan for patent claims critical to the client's global effort to develop a paradigm-breaking technology for delivery of therapeutic molecules, including interfering RNAs.

Summer associate program

Summer associates in Foley & Lardner's eight-week summer program work on an average of 15 assignments that they choose through an online database of available assignments. Summer associates get US$ 2500 per week as summer compensation. Training is provided through 'Foley Academy,' while the firm offers a large variety of pro bono opportunities to its summer associates.

Working for the Foley & Lardner LLP

Foley has a free-market system where associates are responsible for getting their own work. Senior counsel and associates have to record a minimum of 1850 billable hours and a minimum of 150 investment time hours during the firm's billable year.

Foley offers a full spectrum of weekly in-house and external training programs, as well as a formal mentoring program.

Associates look for the opportunity to do cutting-edge work while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. While some aspects such as opaque compensation system, more committees and procedures than the federal government and an identity crisis for the firm play as a drag, there are positives such as Midwestern work ethic and friendliness, access to national-level work, even in regional offices and reasonable hours make it attractive to work at Foley.
